Retrieving Trouble Codes
96 & later are OBD2 systems

There are self-diagnositic connectors on all models, when connected with the key ON (engine off), flash trouble codes on the LED light of the oxygen moniter of the ECU.

Images used with permission Copyright 2001 ALLDATA LLC.

* The connectors are under the steering wheel, to the left of the module on most models.
* On carberated and SPFI injected 89 models, the test connectors are located on the engine side/driver's side of the firewall.
* Imprenza models have the ECU and test connectors located behind the right side of the dash, instead of the left.
* On SVX models the connectors are located behind the driver's side kick panel.

Test Modes

o With neither test connector connected and the key ON(not running), the codes will display codes related to starting and driving.
o With only the "Read Memory" connector connected, historic codes will be displayed.
o With only the "Test Mode" connector connected, a technician can perform dynamic tests.
o The last mode is for clearing codes.(See Clearing Codes)
Reading Trouble Codes

The codes are displayed as pulses of the LED mounted on the module. Long pulses (1.2 seconds) indicate tens and the short pulses (.2 seconds) indicate ones. Pulses are seperated by .3 second puses and codes are seperated by 1.8 second pauses. NOTE:on 89 MPFI models, the Oxygen Moniter light and ECU are mounted under the rear package shelf and are only accessible from the trunk.
On some later models the Check engine lamp and O2 monitor lamp flash the code(s) corresponding to the faulty part. The long segment (1.2 sec on) indicates a "ten", and the short segment (0.2 sec on) signifies a "one".

* 90 models - Trouble codes on the Justy are viewed on the Oxygen Moniter light, all other models the codes can be viewed on either the Oxygen Moniter light or the MIL (check engine light).
* 95 Imprenza and Legacy models have OBD2 systems and require a scanner, but some basic codes can be retreived using the flashing MIL method.

Clearing Codes

Codes will only clear when the faulty system or circuit has been repaired. After making the repairs, codes can be cleared by connecting 2 pairs of connectors, the "Self-diagnostic" connectors and the "Read Memory" connectors that are usually to the right of the diagnostic connectors.

* Start with a warmed up engine
* Turn off the engine
* Connect both pairs of connectors
* Fianlly start the engine
* This should clear the codes.

Diagnostic Codes Kia

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Models up to 95

When trouble occurs in the main input or output devices, check for the cause using the data link connector (DLC) and the malfunction indicator lamp located in the instrument cluster. Failures of each input and output device are indicated and retrieved from the engine control module (ECM) as diagnostic trouble codes.

* Locate DLC at top center of firewall and use jumper wire to connect ENG. TEST and ground terminals.
* On 1995 Sportage models, turn ignition to On, but do not start engine.
* On other models, start and warm engine, then run at 2,000 RPM for 3 minutes.
* Diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed as a series of long and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

Trouble Code Interpretation

The ECM indicates stored fault code by flashing the malfunction indicator/check engine lamp. Fault codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks and fault codes 10 and above are indicated by long and short blinks. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks. The fault code can be determined by adding the long and short blinks.

Clearing Trouble Codes

Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable for at least 20 seconds.

Toyota Trouble Code Info

  • Before proceeding, make sure the:
    • CHECK ENGINE light circuit is functional. It should be ON when the ignition switch is ON with the engine stopped.
    • Battery voltage is above 11 volts.
    • Throttle valve is fully closed (Throttle Position Sensor IDL points closed).
    • Accessory switches (A/C, etc.) are OFF.
    • Engine is at normal operating temperature (if possible).
  • Turn ignition switch to ON position.
    • Do not start the engine.
    • Place a jumper wire across TEl and El terminals in engine check connector.
  • Count number of flashes from CHECK ENGINE light.
    • If system is operating normally (with no detected faults), the CHECK ENGINE light will blink continuously
and evenly about 2 times a second.
  • Otherwise, the light will blink a number of times equal to the trouble code as follows:
    • The light blinks only (.5 second ON, .5 second OFF) when indicating a number.
    • The light will be OFF for 1.5 seconds between the first digit and the second digit of the code.
    • If more than one code is stored, the light will be OFF for 2.5 seconds before the next code is displayed.
    • Once all code(s) have been displayed, the light will be OFF for 4.5 seconds and then the whole sequence will repeat.
  • The diagnostic code series will continue to repeat as long as the check connecter terminals TEl and El are connected.
  • When finished, remove the jumper wire.
  • After repairing the malfunction, clear the codes from the ECUs memory.

    Clearing Trouble Codes

All trouble codes must be purged from the ECUs memory after repairing the faults. Otherwise, code(s) would remain in the ECUs memory indefinitely and would appear along with a new code in the event of a future problem.

  • Remove the EFI fuse (15A) for 30 seconds with the ignition switch OFF to clear any codes. It may take longer than 30 seconds, depending on ambient temperature (the lower the temperature, the longer the fuse must be left out).
  • Trouble codes can also be cleared by disconnecting the vehicle battery. However, other memory functions (clock, radio, etc.), will need to be reset.
  • After the codes are cleared, road test the vehicle (as applicable for the fault) and recheck if any codes reset. If so, it indicates that the trouble area has not been repaired correctly.

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) Daihatsu

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

The ECU self diagnosis circuit detects and stores system malfunctions related to the various sensor and actuator circuits. These malfunctions are stored as DTCs in the ECU as long as battery voltage is applied to the ECU and the Check Engine lamp will remain On as long as the malfunction is present. By analyzing these DTCs, system malfunctions can be easily diagnosed and repaired.

To obtain DTCs stored in the ECU memory, close throttle valve fully and turn all accessory switches off, then proceed as follows:

  1. Short terminals of check connector with check connector test harness tool No. 09991-87702-000, or equivalent.

Check connector test harness

  1. Turn ignition On. Do not start engine.
  2. DTCs stored in ECU will cause Check Engine warning lamp to flash.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Interpretation

  1. Normal System operation is indicated by Check Engine lamp blinking once every 4.5 seconds.
  2. If ECU has detected a system malfunction, Check Engine lamp will blink a number of times to equal to DTC with an interval of 2.5 seconds between DTCs. After all stored DTCs have been read, there will be a 4.5 second pause and all DTCs will repeat.

Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

After service, the DTC retained in the ECU memory must be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable or removing the back-up fuse of the relay block assembly in the engine compartment for at least 10 seconds with the ignition turned Off.

ECU Location

The ECU is located under the driver's seat. With the ignition switch in the "on" position and the engine OFF, the red LED on the ECU will flash the trouble codes. For example, 2 flashes, pause, 3 flashes would mean code 23. Codes are displayed in ascending order.

88-90 Civic, Accord, and Prelude

ECU Location

The ECU is located behind the passenger's side kick panel.

88-91 Civic, Accord, and Prelude

Retrieving Codes

When the CHECK ENGINE warning light has been reported on, turn the ignition ON, pull down the passenger's side carpet inspection flap from under the dashboard, and monitor the LED on the top of the control unit. The LED indicates a system failure code by its blinking frequency.

The control unit LED can indicate any number of simultaneous component problems by blinking separate codes, one after another.

If codes other than those listed are indicated, count the number of blinks again. If the indicator is in fact blinking these codes, substitute a known good ECU and recheck. If the indication goes away, replace the original ECU.

The CHECK ENGINE warning light and control unit LED may come on, indicating a system problem, when in fact, there is a poor or intermittent electrical connection. First, check the electrical connections, clean or repair connections if necessary.

92-95 Accord, Civic, Civic Del Sol and Prelude

Retrieving Codes

With ignition off, insert jumper wire in service check connector terminals, located behind right side of dash on Accord, Civic and Civic Del Sol and near center console on Prelude.
Turn ignition switch to ON position. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be indicated by a series of long and short flashes on MIL.
The number of long flashes indicates the number in the 10s column. The number of short flashes indicates the number in the 1s column. For example, 4 long flashes followed by 3 short flashes would indicate DTC 43.

Clearing Codes

Disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 10 seconds to clear codes.

Accord, Civic, CRX, CR-V, del Sol, Odyssey & Prelude

PGM-CARB

If the PGM-CARB warning lamp is lit, turn ignition On, pull passenger side carpet inspection flap downward under instrument panel and observe LED on top of control unit. The LED indicates a system failure by its blinking frequency.

The control unit LED can indicate any number of simultaneous component conditions by blinking separate codes, one after another.

If DTCs 7, 9, 11, 12, 13 or any higher than 14 are indicated, count the number of blinks again. If the indicator is in fact blinking these DTCs, substitute a known good control unit and inspect again. If indication goes away, replace the control unit. The PGM-CARB warning lamp and control unit LED may light, indicating a system problem when, in fact, there is a poor or intermittent electrical connection. Clean or repair connections as required.

PGM-FI Exc del Sol, Odyssey, 90–98 Accord, 90–91 Prelude 2.1L,
92–98 Prelude & 91–98 Civic

In the event of a PGM-FI system electrical malfunction, an instrument panel mounted indicator lamp will light and stay lit. If the lamp is on, or if a system malfunction is suspected even though the lamp is off, it is necessary to inspect the electronic control unit LED display. The LED display is on the ECM (ECU), which is located just below the RH side of the instrument panel. The indicator lamps operate whenever the ignition is On and a DTC is stored in the ECM (ECU) memory.

When an abnormality is detected the ECM (ECU) display blinks. The LED blinks a certain number of times, with the number of blinks indicating the number of the DTC. After the LED blinks a number of times there will be a two second pause and the LED will blink out the number of the next DTC.
