CHECKING THE ECU CODES

If your CEL has illuminated, it is more helpful to know WHY it has lit up instead of just guessing at the problem... How do you find out what the error is? Well you will need a short peice of wire or a paperclip.

On the passenger side of your car, under the dash beneath the glove box, you will find a green cover above the kickpanel that houses a blue connector that has two wires.

That you need to do is turn the ignition off, and using the piece of wire or paperclip, jump the blue connector so that you connect the two wires together. Basically stick one end of the paperclip or peice of wire into one prong on the connector and stick the other end of the paperclip or wire into the other prong.

Once you have done this, turn the key to the IGN position and watch your CEL light. It will illuminate in a series of flashes.

You will notice that there will be LONG flashes and SHORT flashes. All of the ECU trouble codes are two-digits. LONG flashes determine the TENS digit by the number of times it flashes, and SHORT flashes determine the ONES digit by the number of times it flashes.

...is the trouble code: 34

3 LONG flashes followed by 4 short flashes, then a long pause. If that is the only code the ECU is throwing, then the code will simply repeat until you remove the key. If, however there are more than one ECU error code, then you will see a different series of flashes followed by the long pause. Once all the ECU codes have been displayed, they will continuously cycle until you remove the key.

...is the trouble code: 21 and 43

Once you have determined the codes, you can simply remove the paperclip or wire from the connector and replace it back in the green housing.

So now you have the codes, what good are the numbers? What do they mean? Refer to the CEL TROUBLE CODES section.

you have to short pin D04 to GND in order to check your CEL codes. btw, this harness has produced no codes in my car, other than the one i was getting before i even installed it.

Mitsubishi Trouble Code

96 & later are OBD2 systems and require a scanner.
Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

* Turn ignition switch to OFF position
* Locate Data Link Connector (DLC), next to fuse box.
* Connect voltmeter positive lead to DLC terminal #1 and Negative lead to terminal #12 (ground).
* Turn Ignition switch to ON position.
* codes are read out by 12 volt pulses of voltmeter.
* A constant repetition of short pulses is normal.
* Signals will appear on voltmeter a long and short 12 volt pulses.
* long pulses represent tens
* short pulses represent ones (4 long pulses and 3 short pulses indicates code 43)

1. Ground Data Link Connector terminal # 1.
2.Set the ignition switch to "ON", the Malfunction Indicator (check engine) Lamp will illuminate for a particular duration and a certain number of times.
3.Clear the trouble codes by disconnecting the vehicle battery negative terminal for 16 seconds or longer

EXAMPLES
No Codes--normal

*The Lamp will illuminate for 0.5 seconds, then stay Off for 0.5 seconds, this pattern will repeat until the ignition is turned OFF.

Code 13

*The Lamp will illuminate one time for approximately 0.5 second. This will represent one unit of ten. There will be approximately a one second delay and then the Lamp will illuminate three times for approximately 0.2 seconds with 0.2 second delay between deflections. This will represent three units of one.

Code 23

*The Lamp will illuminate two times for approximately 0.5 second with approximately 0.3 second delay between deflections. This will represent two units of ten. There will be approximately a one second delay and then the Lamp will illuminate three times for approximately 0.2 seconds with 0.2 second delay between deflections. This will represent three units of one..

Clearing Trouble Codes

Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable for at least 20 seconds. Reconnect negative battery cable and recheck codes to confirm the repair.

1. Cycle the ignition key On-Off-On-Off-On within 5 seconds.
2. Count the number of times the malfunction indicator lamp (check engine lamp) on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses (approx. 4 seconds) separate individual trouble codes.
3. Repair the malfunction while referring to the inspection chart for diagnostic trouble codes.
4. After disconnecting the battery cable from the battery (-) terminal for 10 seconds or more, reconnect the cable.
5. Start the engine and run it at idle for about 15 minutes after the engine has warmed up.

Retrieving Trouble Codes
96 & later are OBD2 systems

There are self-diagnositic connectors on all models, when connected with the key ON (engine off), flash trouble codes on the LED light of the oxygen moniter of the ECU.

Images used with permission Copyright 2001 ALLDATA LLC.

* The connectors are under the steering wheel, to the left of the module on most models.
* On carberated and SPFI injected 89 models, the test connectors are located on the engine side/driver's side of the firewall.
* Imprenza models have the ECU and test connectors located behind the right side of the dash, instead of the left.
* On SVX models the connectors are located behind the driver's side kick panel.

Test Modes

o With neither test connector connected and the key ON(not running), the codes will display codes related to starting and driving.
o With only the "Read Memory" connector connected, historic codes will be displayed.
o With only the "Test Mode" connector connected, a technician can perform dynamic tests.
o The last mode is for clearing codes.(See Clearing Codes)
Reading Trouble Codes

The codes are displayed as pulses of the LED mounted on the module. Long pulses (1.2 seconds) indicate tens and the short pulses (.2 seconds) indicate ones. Pulses are seperated by .3 second puses and codes are seperated by 1.8 second pauses. NOTE:on 89 MPFI models, the Oxygen Moniter light and ECU are mounted under the rear package shelf and are only accessible from the trunk.
On some later models the Check engine lamp and O2 monitor lamp flash the code(s) corresponding to the faulty part. The long segment (1.2 sec on) indicates a "ten", and the short segment (0.2 sec on) signifies a "one".

* 90 models - Trouble codes on the Justy are viewed on the Oxygen Moniter light, all other models the codes can be viewed on either the Oxygen Moniter light or the MIL (check engine light).
* 95 Imprenza and Legacy models have OBD2 systems and require a scanner, but some basic codes can be retreived using the flashing MIL method.

Clearing Codes

Codes will only clear when the faulty system or circuit has been repaired. After making the repairs, codes can be cleared by connecting 2 pairs of connectors, the "Self-diagnostic" connectors and the "Read Memory" connectors that are usually to the right of the diagnostic connectors.

* Start with a warmed up engine
* Turn off the engine
* Connect both pairs of connectors
* Fianlly start the engine
* This should clear the codes.

Diagnostic Codes Kia

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Models up to 95

When trouble occurs in the main input or output devices, check for the cause using the data link connector (DLC) and the malfunction indicator lamp located in the instrument cluster. Failures of each input and output device are indicated and retrieved from the engine control module (ECM) as diagnostic trouble codes.

* Locate DLC at top center of firewall and use jumper wire to connect ENG. TEST and ground terminals.
* On 1995 Sportage models, turn ignition to On, but do not start engine.
* On other models, start and warm engine, then run at 2,000 RPM for 3 minutes.
* Diagnostic trouble codes will be displayed as a series of long and short flashes on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

Trouble Code Interpretation

The ECM indicates stored fault code by flashing the malfunction indicator/check engine lamp. Fault codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks and fault codes 10 and above are indicated by long and short blinks. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks. The fault code can be determined by adding the long and short blinks.

Clearing Trouble Codes

Diagnostic trouble codes may be cleared by disconnecting the battery ground cable for at least 20 seconds.
