Handling The ECU (Electronic Control Unit)


ECU (Electronic Control Unit)
ECU (Electronic Control Unit) contains electronic component that are extremely sensitivy to power surges, static, electricity, and phisical shock. Whenever working on or around microcomputer-based system, the following procedures should be used to avoid damaged to electronic component.
  • Power must always be OFF wen removing or installing Ecu wiring harness connector. Make sure the ignitions is turned off and the ECu Fuse Removed.
  • To get rid of any static charge buildup, frequently touch a known good ground with your hands or use statistic protection kit during installation of a ECu. This is especially important if you are moving your feet on a carpet or sliding across a seat.
  • Jumper cable should be connected and disconnected with the ignition OFF to avoid possible power surges. You should avoid both giving and getting jump starts.
  • Always remove the battery cable before charging the battery in car.
  • Hande the ECu unit with extreme care. Dropping it from about waist height onto a concrete floor can do permanent damage.
  • never apply 12V directly to any components of an ECu control System unless intructed specifically to do so. Some components are designed to operate at much lower voltage levels and can be destroyed almost instantly by this higher voltage.
  • When measureing microcomputer-controlled components, suplay voltage with multimeter and separate ane test probe lead from other. If the two test probe leads accidentally make contact with each other during measurement, the circuit will be stored, resuting in damage to the control unit's power transistor.
  • When connecting disconnecting pin connectors into or from the microprosessor port, take care not to damage pin terminals.
  • When installing a replacement engine computer or other electronic module, take the unit out of its protective antistatic bag at the last possible minute.

CHECKING THE ECU CODES

If your CEL has illuminated, it is more helpful to know WHY it has lit up instead of just guessing at the problem... How do you find out what the error is? Well you will need a short peice of wire or a paperclip.

On the passenger side of your car, under the dash beneath the glove box, you will find a green cover above the kickpanel that houses a blue connector that has two wires.

That you need to do is turn the ignition off, and using the piece of wire or paperclip, jump the blue connector so that you connect the two wires together. Basically stick one end of the paperclip or peice of wire into one prong on the connector and stick the other end of the paperclip or wire into the other prong.

Once you have done this, turn the key to the IGN position and watch your CEL light. It will illuminate in a series of flashes.

You will notice that there will be LONG flashes and SHORT flashes. All of the ECU trouble codes are two-digits. LONG flashes determine the TENS digit by the number of times it flashes, and SHORT flashes determine the ONES digit by the number of times it flashes.

...is the trouble code: 34

3 LONG flashes followed by 4 short flashes, then a long pause. If that is the only code the ECU is throwing, then the code will simply repeat until you remove the key. If, however there are more than one ECU error code, then you will see a different series of flashes followed by the long pause. Once all the ECU codes have been displayed, they will continuously cycle until you remove the key.

Once you have determined the codes, you can simply remove the paperclip or wire from the connector and replace it back in the green housing.

Accessing Trouble Codes
With Multi-Use Tester

Except 1993-95 Scoupe

1. Turn ignition switch to Off.
2. Connect harness connector of multi-use tester to diagnostic connector in fuse box, located on left kick panel.
3. Connect power-source terminal of multi-use tester to cigarette lighter socket.
4. Turn ignition switch On, then use multi-use tester to read self-diagnostic codes.
5. Repair any malfunctions found using tester.
6. Turn ignition switch Off, then disconnect battery ground cable for 10 seconds.
7. Check that no malfunction codes are displayed with multi-use tester.
8. Disconnect multi-use tester. If a test is to made during cranking, the power to cigarette lighter will be interrupted therefore, use a separate battery harness for multi-use tester.

With Analog Voltmeter

Except 1993-95 Scoupe

1. Connect voltmeter to self-diagnosis connector, located in fuse box on left kick panel.
2. Turn ignition switch On and note an immediate indication of ECM (ECU) memory contents will begin. If system is in normal condition, pointer of voltmeter indicates a normal pattern. If any abnormality is in the memory, pointer of voltmeter will deflect indicating an abnormal condition.
3. After recording abnormal items, check and repair each part.
4. After repairs have been completed, disconnect battery ground cable for at least 15 seconds to erase codes from memory.

Using On-Board Diagnostic Lamp

1993-95 Scoupe

1. With ignition switch in the On position, ground the No. 10 terminal (L wire) of diagnostic connector for approximately 2.5 seconds.
2. The diagnostic connector is located on the left hand kick panel. The first diagnostic trouble code or no fault detected will be indicated by the on-board diagnostic lamp. The onboard diagnostic lamp will indicated DTC's by flashing frequencies and 2 second pauses. As an example, one flash, followed by a 2 second pause, followed by two flashes and another 2 second pause, followed by two flashes and a 2 second pause, followed by three flashes and another 2 second pause, indicates a failure code 1223. The fault code will be repeated until the No. 10 terminal of the diagnostic connector is grounded to proceed to the next fault code.
3. The last output consist of the end of output code 3333.

Clearing Trouble Codes

To erase any diagnostic codes, disconnect battery ground cable for 15 seconds and the ECM (ECU) memory will be erased.

85 Accord, 85-87 Civic

ECU Location

The ECU is located under the passenger's seat. Codes are displayed on a series of four LEDs. With the ignition switch in the "on" position and the engine off, codes will be displayed in ascending order.

ECU Location

The ECU is located under the driver's seat. With the ignition switch in the "on" position and the engine OFF, the red LED on the ECU will flash the trouble codes. For example, 2 flashes, pause, 3 flashes would mean code 23. Codes are displayed in ascending order.

88-90 Civic, Accord, and Prelude

The ECU is located behind the passenger's side kick panel.

Retrieving Codes

When the CHECK ENGINE warning light has been reported on, turn the ignition ON, pull down the passenger's side carpet inspection flap from under the dashboard, and monitor the LED on the top of the control unit. The LED indicates a system failure code by its blinking frequency.

The control unit LED can indicate any number of simultaneous component problems by blinking separate codes, one after another.

If codes other than those listed are indicated, count the number of blinks again. If the indicator is in fact blinking these codes, substitute a known good ECU and recheck. If the indication goes away, replace the original ECU.

The CHECK ENGINE warning light and control unit LED may come on, indicating a system problem, when in fact, there is a poor or intermittent electrical connection. First, check the electrical connections, clean or repair connections if necessary.

92-95 Accord, Civic, Civic Del Sol and Prelude

Retrieving Codes

With ignition off, insert jumper wire in service check connector terminals, located behind right side of dash on Accord, Civic and Civic Del Sol and near center console on Prelude.
Turn ignition switch to ON position. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be indicated by a series of long and short flashes on MIL.
The number of long flashes indicates the number in the 10s column. The number of short flashes indicates the number in the 1s column. For example, 4 long flashes followed by 3 short flashes would indicate DTC 43.


Clearing Codes

Disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 10 seconds to clear codes.

Accord, Civic, CRX, CR-V, del Sol, Odyssey & Prelude

PGM-CARB

If the PGM-CARB warning lamp is lit, turn ignition On, pull passenger side carpet inspection flap downward under instrument panel and observe LED on top of control unit. The LED indicates a system failure by its blinking frequency.

The control unit LED can indicate any number of simultaneous component conditions by blinking separate codes, one after another.

If DTCs 7, 9, 11, 12, 13 or any higher than 14 are indicated, count the number of blinks again. If the indicator is in fact blinking these DTCs, substitute a known good control unit and inspect again. If indication goes away, replace the control unit. The PGM-CARB warning lamp and control unit LED may light, indicating a system problem when, in fact, there is a poor or intermittent electrical connection. Clean or repair connections as required.

PGM-FI Exc del Sol, Odyssey, 90–98 Accord, 90–91 Prelude 2.1L,
92–98 Prelude & 91–98 Civic

In the event of a PGM-FI system electrical malfunction, an instrument panel mounted indicator lamp will light and stay lit. If the lamp is on, or if a system malfunction is suspected even though the lamp is off, it is necessary to inspect the electronic control unit LED display. The LED display is on the ECM (ECU), which is located just below the RH side of the instrument panel. The indicator lamps operate whenever the ignition is On and a DTC is stored in the ECM (ECU) memory.

When an abnormality is detected the ECM (ECU) display blinks. The LED blinks a certain number of times, with the number of blinks indicating the number of the DTC. After the LED blinks a number of times there will be a two second pause and the LED will blink out the number of the next DTC.

90–95 Accord Four Cylinder, 90–91 Prelude 2.1L, 92–95 Prelude & 91–95 Civic

If the malfunction indicator/Check Engine lamp remains lit or lights while the engine is operating, the ECM has detected a malfunction and has stored a DTC in its memory. To access the DTC memory, connect a jumper wire between the check connector terminals. On Accord and Civic models, the check connector is located under the RH side of the instrument panel. On 90–91 Prelude models equipped with 2.1L engine, the check connector is located in the engine compartment. On 92–95 Prelude models, the check connector is located in the passenger compartment behind the center console.

On all models, turn the ignition On. The ECM indicates stored DTCs by flashing the malfunction indicator/Check Engine lamp. DTCs one through nine are indicated by individual short blinks. DTCs 10 and above are indicated by long and short blinks. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks. The DTC can be determined by adding the long and short blinks.

95–97 Accord V6 & 96–97 Accord 4 Cyl.
